IIT Kharagpur
IIT Kharagpur is a maiden name for engineering and other science related studies in West Bengal. It was established in 1951 and is among the first IITs to be set up in the country. It is recognised as the Institute of National Importance and was even awarded Institute of Eminence in 2019 by the Government of India. Today IIT Kharagpur not only provides education in Engineering but has also spread out to Management, Law, Architecture, Humanities and various other branches of education. Indian Statistical Institute
It is another Institute of National Importance established in 1931. The institute holds a unique value for being one of the oldest institutions focused on statistics. Till date it is the most prestigious statistics institute in the country. This research institute came out from the Statistical laboratory set up by scientist and statistician Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in Presidency College in Kolkata. The first US institute of statistics set up followed ISI as the model institute because of it’s great name. The institute’s key focuses are Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Mathematical Economics, Operations Research and Information Science. ISI offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs and is affiliated to AIU (Association of Indian Universities). University of Calcutta
The university of Calcutta, popularly known as Calcutta University was established in 1857. A pioneer in education, it was among the first multidisciplinary and Western Style Institutes in Asia. The university has bagged several accreditations and awards, it is accredited ‘A’ by NAAC and recognized as a ‘Five Star’ college in the country. Calcutta University has also been awarded “Centre with Potential for Excellence in Particular Area” and “University with potential for excellence” by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Jadavpur University
Jadavpur University was initially established in 1905 National Council of Education to promote Technical Education in Bengal. The official establishment of Jadavpur University was done after the Independence in 1955 by the Government of India and Government of West Bengal. The Institute has been ranked 17 among engineering institutes in India by the National Institutional Ranking and Framework in 2020. Among the Universities, the University was ranked 5th by the NIRF. The University has three faculties; Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering and Technology. University of Burdwan
The University of Burdwan was established in 1960 as teaching and affiliating University by the West Bengal Government. It is a premier four-star (accredited by NAAC under UGC) University with six graduate departments and 30 Undergraduate colleges spread across three districts Birbhum district, Purba Bardhaman district and Hooghly district (except Srirampore subdivision). 189 colleges (including degree colleges, BEd colleges and private professional institutes) are affiliated under this university and there are 227 faculties. Inspiria Knowledge Campus
Inspiria Knowledge Campus is a forthcoming management college in West Bengal. This college was established in 2010 by J.P. Sahu Foundation (a non-profit organization charitable trust registered under West Bengal Societies Registration Act, 1961). Visva Bharati University
Visva Bharati university is an Institution of National Importance founded by Rabindranath Tagore in 1921. This central research university is located in Shantiniketan, West Bengal. The university name was given by Rabindranath Tagore himself which translates to communion of the world with India. Visva bharati University gained its status as the central university after the independence by an act of Parliament in the year 1951. NIRF ranked the university 69th all over India. St. Xavier’s College
Established in 1860 St. Xavier’s College is a private higher education college in Kolkata. The college is named after a 16th Century Jesuit saint St. Francis Xavier. Known as the first Christian Missionary St. Francis Xavier had travelled to India as an evangelist. St. Xavier’s College has been ranked 7th equal by NIRF, the college also became the first autonomous college in West Bengal in 2006. The institute offers courses in the fields of Science, Arts and Commerce. In Science they have degree programmes in Microbiology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Biotechnology. Scottish Church College
Scottish Church College was established in the 1800s as an initiative by a Christian missionary of the Church of Scotland Alexander Duff (the first overseas missionary to India). When it was set up in 1830 it was called the General Assembly’s Institution and this name saw a lot of changes over time. The institute’s name was changed three times; in (1843) Free Church Institution, (1863) Duff College, (1908) Scottish Churches College until it was finally registered as Scottish Church College in 1929 after the unification of the Church of Scotland. It is an A rated (by NAAC) college and also, the oldest and continuously running Christian Liberal arts and sciences college in India. The college offers various undergraduate programmes and postgraduate programmes in Master of Science in Botany, Master of Science in Chemistry, Bachelor of Education (postgraduate course for women students, offered by the Department of Teacher Education). Siliguri Institute of Technology is one of its kind institutes in North Bengal. It was established in 1999 under Techno India Group.
