NATIONAL FILM AWARD WINNER (2010) from the Hon’ble President of India, Ujjal Chakraborty is a very exceptional person in the history of Indian Media. Because, he has been working – for the last 40 years – in all the branches of Media. His range of expertise is vast. From Film Direction to Cricket Journalism. From Music Direction to Film-Script Writing .. TV-Anchoring to Novel-Writing … BookIllustration to Film-Review .. and so on. He is amazingly versatile indeed. What is most remarkable – he always works in the Mainstream of Media and on the Highest Level. Simultaneously, for the last 16 years, he is a regular faculty of Animation Films in the Indo-Italian Institute of Films & Mass Communication (‘Roop Kala Kendro’) in Sector V, Calcutta.

EDUCATION

  • Studied Mass Communication, Animation and Modern Film Technology from Magica Institute in Rome, Italy
  • Learnt Drawing, Painting, Designing and Communication/ Commercial Art from the Govt. College of Art & Crafts, adjacent to Indian Museum, Calcutta

EXPERIENCE

  • ACADEMICS-For the last 16 years, he is a regular faculty of Animation Films in the Indo-Italian Institute of Films & Mass Communication (‘Roop Kala Kendro’) in Sector V, Calcutta
  • INDUSTRY-Has an approximate work experience of 20-years with Mr. Satyajit RAY.

FILM-INDUSTRY

  • National Film Development Corporation of India (Govt. of India): Ujjal professionally worked as the researcher as well as the designer of a big Historical Feature Film – ‘Sati’, starring Shabana Azmi and directed by Aparna Sen.
  • National Film Development Corporation (Govt. of India): Ujjal worked as a designer in ‘Antarjali Jatra’, a bi-lingual film starring Shatrughan Sinha and directed by Goutam Ghosh.
  • DOORDARSHAN (Govt.) : Worked as the chief Art Director of ‘Picnic’, a one-hour-long Hindi film in 35 mm. The main stars of the film were Shabana Azmi and Shriram Lagu. It was written and directed by Aparna Sen.
  • DOORDARSHAN (Govt.) : Anchor-person and the Music Director of a weekly programme of Cultural Review – ‘Cholchhey-Cholbey’.
  • SATYAJIT RAY (‘Bharat-Ratna’, Govt. of India & OSCAR, Hollywood, USA) : Closely observed all the stages of his film-making (1975 – 1991)
  • FORD FOUNDATION (U.S.A.) : Worked as the chief researcher of the film ‘RAY’, directed by Goutam Ghosh.
  • Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (Govt. of India) : Worked as the chief researcher of a documentary film on Chemical Biology. It was directed by Goutam Ghosh.
  • ASIATIC SOCIETY (Govt. of India) : Worked as a researcher of a 2-hour-long documentary film on the history of The Society since 1785.
  • GOVT. OF ITALY : Made about 5 short films produced by Govt. of Italy.

  • Juddher Gayen’ (The Singers of The Battle-field), a historical novel, published by ‘Srishty’, Kolkata, 2000.
  • Satyajit Ray-er Chalachchitrey Choritro-chitron’ (Characterization in the Films of Satyajit Ray), a Bengali-book published by the Govt. of West Bengal. 1993.

AWARDS

  • NATIONAL FILM AWARD for his English Book – The Director’s Mind – on the techniques of Film-making. The award was received from the Hon’ble President of India, 2010
  • FIRST PRIZE IN PAINTING received from Professor Satyen Bose (The Discoverer of BOSON), 1970, in an art-competition organized by Art Errand, the best Art School of Calcutta in the 1970s

ACHIEVEMENT

  • Played a major role in the establishment of the Indo-Italian Films & Social Communication Institute in Calcutta (1998 – 2005). It’s Bengali name is ‘Roop Kala Kendro’.
