Inspiria is Local Chapter for NPTEL Courses

In this age of communication and information explosion, no successful professional can afford to sit back on his/her degrees and laurels, flaunting an attitude that reflects a misplaced sense of confidence and self-complacency. It’s a fast-changing world and what is required is the skill to adapt and adjust to newer scenarios and settings. This is why so much stress is being put nowadays on the transdisciplinary approach and the ability to renew or update one’s knowledge and skills from time to time.

It is with this objective the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) has come up with short skill-enhancement based online courses. These 4, 8 or 12 week based online courses initially focussed on engineering and computer science based subjects. Around 600 video/web-based courses were offered to undergraduate and postgraduate students free. Besides a nominal examination charge, no fees have to be paid to avail these courses.

NPTEL was initiated by seven IITs and Indian Institute of Science. This means the best faculty team teaching in IITs/IIMs deliver these courses. More than 1.5 million students have enrolled and obtained certificates in/from NPTEL. Today, besides engineering and science subjects, courses on humanities, social sciences and management are also being informed.

NPTEL certificate courses are offered twice a year. Students can enroll either inform August to October or from January to April. There are 10, 20 and 30-hour courses. Course videos can be downloaded free from the NPTEL website or watched on youtube.

Some of the interesting, as well as useful courses NPTEL is offering, include a 10 hours course on Visual perception & Art. The 20 hour / 8-week courses include:-

  • Developing Soft Skills and Personality
  • Basic Cognitive Processes
  • Technical English for Engineers
  • Gender and Literature.

Some of the 30 hour/12 week courses are offered on:-

  • Applied Linguistics
  • Ecology and Society
  • Human Resource Development
  • Science, Technology and Society

The courses conducted online by NPTEL are under the aegis of the Government of India’s Ministry of Human Resource Development.
