World Suicide Prevention Day is an awareness day observed on the 10th of September each year. It is done in order to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides.
The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) collaborates with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) to host the World Suicide Prevention Day.
In the past years, over 300 activities in and around 70 countries have been reported to the IASP. Every year we see a number of people committing suicide due to various reasons. This happens because of the negative mindset of the people who feel neglected and alienated by the society. The minds and thoughts attached to suicide are largely negative and often ignorant of the true facts.
World Suicide Prevention Day is symbolic of the intense need for us to shift away from these problematic interpretations of suicide towards a society that is more supportive, understanding and informed in regards to the tragic phenomenon.
The more suicide is discussed openly and reflected upon seriously the more possible it becomes for people to overcome the negative stigma that is attached to suicide. It is time to start a conversation on the topic.
