International Day of Charity – Homage to Mother Teresa

Inside This Article

The United Nations established September 5th as an International Day of Charity. The date was chosen in honor of Mother Teresa, who passed away on this very day in the year 1997.

Mother Teresa had dedicated her life to helping the poor and the disadvantaged people around the world. Her work for the poor was highlighted with the Nobel Prize in 1979.

At the initiative of Hungary, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution by mutual consensus to designate the day as International Day of Charity.

The United Nations encourages individuals and organizations to observe the International Day of Charity through volunteer work, organizing a funding campaign, holding an event, sharing charitable acts on social media and rewarding good deeds in a creative way.

On this International Day of Charity, the United Nations has invited all member states and all International and Regional organizations as well as civil society to celebrate the day in an appropriate manner by encouraging charity through education and public awareness activities.
