The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is a statutory body, and a national-level council for technical education, under the Department of Higher Education. Established in November 1945 first as an advisory body, which was given statutory status by an Act of Parliament in 1987, the AICTE is responsible for proper planning and coordinated development of the technical education and management education system in India.

Statutory Boards of Studies
It is assisted by 10 Statutory Boards of Studies, namely, UG Studies in Eng. & Tech., PG and Research in Eng. and Tech., Management Studies, Vocational Education, Technical Education, Pharmaceutical Education, Architecture, Hotel Management and Catering Technology, Information Technology, Town and Country Planning. One must note that the AICTE does not replace the University Grants Commission (UGC)as an affiliating body. Rather AICTE is an all-India council which accredits institutions offering technical engineering, computer science and management undergraduate and post-graduate degree courses. The accreditation by the council provides a value addition to the technical education system in the country. For all UG and PG institutes, UGC affiliation is a must. AICTE accreditation is an additional recognition necessary for institutes to offer technical and professional courses.
AICTE to Also Regulate BBA and BCA Courses
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will take charge of the regulation of the Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA), Bachelor of Business Management (BBA) and Bachelor of Management Studies from the academic session 2024-25. This was announced by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in a recent notification. The move is aimed at ensuring uniform quality and academic standards across Management and Computer Application programs at both the UG and PG levels.
As of now, the AICTE is regulating only the Post Graduate Programs in Management (MBA) and Computer Application (MCA). However, from the next academic year, AICTE has decided to regulate institutions offering BBA, BMS & BCA courses in view of maintaining uniform quality & academic standards across Management and Computer Applications Programs on similar lines of Post Graduate Courses/Programs (MCA/MBA)
