The West Bengal government has recently made an important announcement regarding the format of the higher education system in the state. Starting from the academic year 2023-2024, a new 4-year undergraduate honours course will be introduced.

This move is aimed to provide students with an enriched learning experience and to expand their educational opportunities. The Education Minister, Bratya Basu, expressed his enthusiasm for this development. It states that the 4-year honours course will be implemented in both state-run and aided higher educational institutions.

This means that private colleges in West Bengal are likely to have an exit option after three years as per UGC guidelines.

After consulting with all the concerned parties, we made this decision. We also considered the recommendations of a panel of experts appointed by the state.

Following the guidelines set by the UGC, certain colleges have already made the transition to four-year degree courses. These colleges have also introduced an option for students to exit the program after completing three years of study, in accordance with the UGC guidelines.

The 4-year undergraduate honours course provides several advantages for students. UGC’s 4 Year course new format

One of the important changes introduced in the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020 is the modification of the duration of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Instead of the traditional three-year undergraduate program, the NEP proposes a four-year honours course. Similarly, the NEP suggests a one-year postgraduate course instead of the usual two-year program. This is referred to as the 4+1 format. Here, the students will spend four years in their undergraduate studies and an additional year for postgraduate studies.

This new format, often referred to as the 4+1 format, emphasizes a more comprehensive and holistic approach to education. It provides students with an extended timeframe to explore their interests, engage in research, internships, and experiential learning. They can acquire practical skills that are directly applicable to their chosen fields. Additionally, the reduced duration of the postgraduate course enables students to enter the workforce or pursue further studies sooner.

UGC’s 4 Year Course Overview

Under the new guidelines, the first three semesters of the program will focus on providing students with a broad understanding of various subjects. These subjects include natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, mathematical and computational thinking, and vocational education.

From semesters 4 to 6, students will have the opportunity to select a specific field of study. either within a single discipline or across multiple disciplines, for specialization as their major and minor subjects.

In semesters 7 and 8, students will engage in a research project alongside their coursework. This will provide them with hands-on experience and the opportunity to explore and contribute to their chosen field of study.

In summary, the initial semesters will cover a wide range of subjects, while later semesters will allow students to focus and specialize in their preferred areas. The final semesters will involve a research project that adds practical experience to their academic journey.

UGC’s 4 Year Credit System.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently published new guidelines for the Curriculum and Credit Framework of Four Year Undergraduate Programs. These guidelines were developed in response to recommendations from the National Education Policy (NEP). The UGC has also made changes to its Choice Based Credit system and introduced a new curriculum for the four-year undergraduate programs.

To succeed, students need to earn 160 credits by completing coursework and dedicating time to learning. By following this streamlined approach, students can fast-track their education and promptly enter the workforce or pursue further studies without delay.

This accelerated degree pathway provides a more efficient and time-effective route towards obtaining a Bachelor’s degree. It enables students to fast-track their academic goals, optimizing their educational journey beyond traditional degree programs. UGC 4 Year Course Rules

UGC has implemented new rules for undergraduate programs that span three or four years. These programs offer students various options for entering and leaving the program, as well as opportunities to re-enter at different points.

1. Flexible Duration Options

Upon completion of a one-year, two-semester course, students will receive an undergraduate certificate. If they continue for two years and complete four semesters, they will earn a certificate equivalent to a bachelor’s degree. Finally, after three years and six semesters, they will obtain a three-year certificate, also equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.

However, if the four-year program is opted for by students and a major research project is successfully completed by them in their fourth year of study, a 4-year bachelor’s degree will be awarded to them.

2. Credit-Based Programme

The new curriculum also emphasizes the inclusion of credit-based programs and assignments related to value-based education, environmental education, and community service. This approach aims to foster a well-rounded education that contributes to the holistic development of student’s potential.

3. Flexible learning Medium

Additionally, the revised framework provides students with options to transition to different modes of learning, including offline, online, open and distance learning (ODL), and hybrid modes. This flexibility ensures that students have diverse avenues to pursue their education based on their preferences and circumstances.

Overall, these new rules introduced by the UGC aim to create a comprehensive and flexible undergraduate education system that promotes students’ overall growth and enables them to explore various learning opportunities while earning their degrees.

UGC 4 Year Course MPhil and P.hd programmes

After completing a four-year undergraduate program, students who wish to pursue a two-year postgraduate degree and an MPhil must achieve a minimum grade of 55% to qualify for admission to a PhD program.

However, it’s important to note that the MPhil program will not be available for an extended period of time. As per the reforms outlined in the National Education Policy, certain esteemed colleges will gradually discontinue offering MPhil programs in the coming years.

In simpler terms, students who finish a four-year undergraduate program can choose to pursue a two-year postgraduate degree and an MPhil. To be eligible for a PhD program, they need to obtain at least 55% in their studies. MPhil program will soon phased out in some renowned colleges, as per the reforms mentioned in the National Education Policy.
