Hurun India, a subsidiary of Hurun Report, one of the leading research, luxury publishing, and events groups based in London, has released the Hurun India Rich list for 2021, which appears to be one of the most dynamic ever. First, it reports India’s new milestone: the country now has over a thousand and seven individuals worth Rs 1,000 crore spread across 119 cities. Mukesh Ambani, 64 topped the list for the 10th year in a row, with INR 7,18,000 crore, maintaining the title of the richest Indian for the 10th year in a row.
Other key takeaways from the list include the fact that, for the first time, both Adani brothers made the top 10. In fact, Gautam Adani, who nearly quadrupled his wealth from INR 1,40,200 CR, has surpassed China’s number one bottled water producer, Zhing Shanshan, to become Asia’s second richest man. Gautam Adani came second in the list with INR 5,05,900 crore, while his brother Vinod Shantilal Adani broke into the top ten, with his wealth tripling to INR 1,31,600 crore.
Aside from all of this, one of the most intriguing takeaways from the Hurun IRL 2021 is the number of new face entrepreneurs and women who have managed to break the record. According to the list, a record 659 entrepreneurs, or 66 percent, are self-made, up from 530 last year and 54 percent five years ago. This year, 74 percent of new faces are self-made entrepreneurs. Chemicals is the fastest growing industry, adding 42 new faces, with a total of inr 5,61,200 cr. Not only that, but four new members have joined the top ten of the list, led by steel magnates Lakshmi Mittal, 71 of Arcelormittal, and Kumar Mangalam Birla, 54 of Aditya Birla Group.
Jay Chaudhry, 62, of California-based enterprise cloud cyber security firm Zscaler, is the other new face on the list, in addition to Vinod Shantilal Adani. According to the report, the entry of Laxmi Mittal and Kumar Mangalam Birla into the top ten was due to the resurgence in the global economy, whereas jay choudhary owed his entry into the top ten to the accentuated demand for cyber security services caused by a series of ransomware attacks on us institutions.
Some of India’s business women also made an impression on the list. In terms of India’s richest woman, third-generation inheritor of Godrej Smita V Crishna, 70, took the title. The ‘Biotech Queen’ Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, 68, on the other hand, is the richest Indian self-made woman. Neha Narkhede, the 36-year-old co-founder of Confluent, a streaming data technology company, is India’s youngest self-made woman entrepreneur.
We refer to this year’s IRL as “dynamic” because of the demographic diversity. It was also revealed that 13 people born in the 1990s made the list, all on their own. Shashvat Nakrani, 23, of payment app Bharatpe, is the youngest self-made individual. The list was mostly made up of start-up founders or entrepreneurs, which says a lot about the Indian startup ecosystem; there were 46 founders of 26 unicorns on the list. Startup founders such as Byju Ravenndran (Byju’s), Nakul Agrawal and Ritesh Arora (BrowserStack), and Neha Narkhede (Confluent) made their mark on the list. With entrepreneurs like Shashvat Nakrani and Neha Narkhede breaking into the IRL, young entrepreneurs are entering a new era. The increase in the number of self-made people making it into the IRL is also a great source of inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs, while also demonstrating that India is moving at a breakneck pace.
