B. Tech (Bachelor of Technology) or B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) commonly known as Engineering is apparently the top professional course studied in India. Since it’s a first (100%) professional course it is considered fairly safe leading to more and more high schoolers taking this course after 12th standard. According to stats, there are a total of 6,214 Engineering and Technology Institutes where around 2.9 million students are enrolled. An average of 1.5 million students graduate in Engineering every year in India. Just imagine the amount of competition after graduation. Because of the lack of skill required to perform technical jobs only less than 20 percent (of the above data) get employment in the core fields of engineering. This data has many students in crossroads when it comes to higher education after Engineering.
So what after B. Tech?
Many engineering graduates usually have three options in front of them after graduation
i) M. Tech (Master of Technology)
ii) MBA (Master of Business Administration)
iii) Working in Public or Private sector
M. Tech
M. Tech is the traditional course after B. Tech but not many engineering graduates take up this course. This two year course is mainly followed by engineering graduates who wish to take up professions in research and teaching. M. tech alumnus are engineers but they mainly end up in educational professions such as professors and lecturers. They sometimes take their educational achievement further by doing a Phd to add the doctorate degree to their names.
What about MBA after engineering?
Unlike M. Tech, MBA after engineering opens up a lot of doors to new career paths. An engineer is already skilled in the field of technology but MBA further skills them in Business Management, which is one of the most important skills in today’s day and age. Engineers can pursue Entrepreneurship or get a head start into the corporate world after getting an MBA degree.
According to a survey done by Times of India in 2019, 45% of CEOs in India are engineers, among those 78% have a postgraduate degree, out of which 64% of CEOs hold an MBA degree. The survey also found that 83% of CEOs running a family owned business also hold MBA degrees with their graduation in Engineering.
Well the stats say it all! MBA is the key to those high paying positions but apart from that, taking up MBA after engineering is like entering a whole new world. If engineering is all about technical skills, MBA is all about managerial skills and business growing skills. Whether you want to become an entrepreneur, take up family business, join a MNC or enter tech biggies like Google, Tesla, Facebook etc MBA equips you with all the needed corporate skills. Every corporate firm asks for a professional who is sound both in Management and Technology. More skills in today’s fast-tracked world means welcoming more fatty pay checks. The difference in paycheck again depends on experience, more professional experience, higher the salary. In a nutshell, a Bachelor in Engineering with an MBA is a full package which trains students to understand the demand and nature of work in the industry.
